Benefits of mindfulness span over a wide spectrum – but why is setting up a daily mindfulness practice the most beneficial?

There’s no shortage of things vying for our attention at work. It starts the moment we wake up and doesn’t let up until we fall asleep. It’s easy to get lured into the trap of bouncing from one task to the next, hoping to keep up or even get ahead.

But what if the key to accomplishing more and experiencing more joy in all areas of our lives is actually slowing down and taking a little time each day to do less?

In this article, Jay Shetty shares about one thing he practices daily to help keep him at the top of his game. It takes just minutes, but it results in more peace, calm, and focus throughout the day. Oh, and it can be done from anywhere, anytime. What is it? Meditation.

Stress and the Workplace

How big of a problem IS workplace stress? According to the American Institute of Stress, “Stress causes close to one million workers to miss work every day,” leading up to a total of $300 billion in losses annually.1

As the Institute has discovered, “Only 43 percent of US workers think their employer cares about their work-life balance.” They go on to say that each year, work-related stress causes 120,000 deaths, and stress-related health costs have skyrocketed to an annual cost of $190 billion.

If work is stressing you out, you’re not alone! We need mindfulness and meditation today more than ever—something Jay Shetty realized very quickly after leaving his life as a monk and returning to the workplace.

One of the things Shetty first noticed among his colleagues and friends was the high level of stress they carried with them from day to day. He found himself doing what he could to help by teaching them mindfulness and meditation. Soon, he was speaking to entire businesses and organizations, helping them put mindfulness practices to work to help with day-to-day workplace stress.

It wasn’t long before Shetty was ready to bring his mindfulness messages to the world through videos and social media. Today, he’s helped millions through his #1 ranked Health & Wellness podcast, ON Purpose, along with coaching programs and courses, and social media channels. So, what are his suggestions for caring for your mental health at work?

Starting Your Day with Peace

According to Jay Shetty, peace is a muscle that has to be built. What better way to start than by adding a mindfulness practice to your morning routine? Meditation and breathwork are great ways to clear the way for peace.

Starting the day in a state of peace and calm will give you the right energy to get through the day when things don’t go your way, or when you face obstacles.

Peace on the Inside, Peace on the Outside

When tasks and deadlines are moving at a frenetic pace, you can’t always control how peaceful your workplace environment is. Thankfully, you can still cultivate peace from within by practicing mindfulness.

Create a peaceful environment where you can with sights, scents, and sounds. Then set aside a few minutes a day for mindfulness.

“Peace doesn’t mean things are not moving,” Jay Shetty said. “They’re just moving at a natural pace. That’s where we get peace. If we’re not looking at connecting with peaceful things in our lives, how can we expect to experience peace?”

In addition to nature, scents and sounds are a great way to invite peace into your life. Light a scented candle or play your favorite song. Sit in nature and listen to the birds sing. Take a moment to pause and take in a whiff of your favorite scent or listen to a meditation. Do something that brings you joy.

A New Role

Jay Shetty has recently announced he has accepted a new role as Chief Purpose Officer at Calm, the popular mental wellness brand. As part of his role, he’s launching his first Calm for Business daily content series,The Daily Jay,to help organizations support their employees’ mental well-being.  .

“With my new daily series on Calm, I am bringing my meditation, storytelling, wisdom and action into one place for the first time, and it’s powerful,” said Jay Shetty.

Meditation Anywhere, Anytime

The Daily Jay will feature seven-minute daily mindfulness sessions that include an uplifting monologue, a short meditation, and an actionable life insight. Jay Shetty’s goal is to help organizations make mindfulness an integral part of daily workplace culture.

“My hope forThe Daily Jayis to re-think how we implement meditation into our daily lives,” said Shetty. “It’s not something you have to do alone in a quiet space. You can take your practice into the busyness of your life. That’s the beauty of it.”

TheDaily Jay series is an offshoot of The Daily Calm, a daily series by Tamara Levitt. Sessions will feature meditations on mindset, habit formation, morning routines, purposeful living, and more. This is Shetty’s first daily series, and it’s only available on Calm.

Mental Health and the Workplace

Calm for Business strives to bring more openness and accessibility to mental health tools in an effort to help the world see mental health as an important part of overall health. This is a concept Jay Shetty has long-championed as well.

As indicated by the American Institute of Stress’s research, Jay Shetty said, “Forty-three percent of full time employees [seem to see their job as] the main cause of their negative mental health. This needs to change. Work should be a place where we flourish, not a constant source of stress.”

In his new role as Chief Purpose Officer, Shetty will focus on developing content for employees that help them build mental resilience. He’ll also be at the forefront of conversations that bring awareness and emphasis on mental health and employee experience inside organizations.

“We must always be reimagining the relationship between mental health and work, empowering employees to have conversations to eliminate stigmas, and shining a light on available resources,” said Jay Shetty..

Greg Justice, Calm’s VP of Content, agrees. “The Daily Calm has been listened to over 150 million times by our community,” he said. “[This] daily practice has a profound impact on our members.
